What’s Hot in Custom Kitchen and Bath Cabinets?

As Louisville homeowners seek to elevate their living spaces, the latest trends in custom cabinetry blend form, function, and personal flair. From innovative storage solutions that maximize every inch to bold finishes that make a statement, today’s custom cabinets are more than mere storage they’re design focal points. In this article, we’ll explore the top trends shaping kitchens and baths in Louisville, KY, drawing insights from the city’s leading experts and highlighting how The Burkhart Company brings these trends to life.

Stylish Storage: Beyond Traditional Shelving

Maximizing storage while maintaining a sleek look remains a key priority. Louisville homeowners increasingly favor hidden storage solutions, think pull-out spice racks, concealed trash bins, and deep drawers with organizational inserts that keep countertops clutter-free and essentials within easy reach. Custom cabinets tailored to specific needs, like bakeware drawers sized for sheet pans or tiered drawers for utensils, are on the rise. These personalized storage features not only add convenience but also enhance the overall kitchen workflow.

Trending Styles: From Shaker to Slab

Local cabinet makers report that five styles dominate custom projects today:

• Traditional: Characterized by raised or inset panel doors in classic woods and muted hues.
• Shaker: Known for their clean lines and flat panels, offering timeless appeal.
• Rustic: Showcasing natural wood grains, knots, and hand-scraped textures for a cozy, cabin-like feel.
• Contemporary: Emphasizing minimalist surfaces, often in engineered materials like glass and metal.
• Slab: Ultra-modern, flat-front designs that create a seamless, handle-less look.

Many Louisville homes now blend styles pairing traditional upper cabinets with sleek slab base units to achieve a custom, layered aesthetic.

Color & Finish Trends: Bold and Natural Tones

White cabinets are no longer the default. Warm and natural wood finishes such as walnut, oak, and cherry are staging a comeback, bringing depth and warmth to kitchens. Meanwhile, two-tone cabinetry (e.g., darker islands contrasted with lighter perimeter units) offers dynamic visual interest and highlights architectural elements. For those craving color, moody hues like forest green or navy are growing in popularity, serving as accent cabinets that stand out against neutral backdrops.

Statement Hardware: The Finishing Touch

Cabinet hardware has evolved from simple pulls to statement-making accents. Matte black, aged brass, and brushed gold finishes complement a range of cabinet colors, while colorful knobs and handles introduce playful pops of personality. Designers recommend balancing hardware scale with cabinet proportions: larger bar pulls for slab doors and delicate knobs for traditional panels create cohesive, thoughtfully styled spaces.

Innovative Materials: Mixing Textures

Mixing materials adds depth and character to cabinets. Think wood frames with glass fronts, metal inlays, or even stone panels incorporated into certain doors. In bathrooms, textured tile or terrazzo cabinet bases create a bespoke, spa-like atmosphere. These hybrid designs allow homeowners to infuse creativity and tailor cabinetry to their unique style.

Smart & Sustainable Features

Today’s custom cabinets aren’t just beautiful, they’re smart and eco-friendly. Soft-close hinges and push-to-open mechanisms ensure quiet, effortless operation while reducing wear and tear on doors and drawers. Sustainable materials, such as FSC-certified woods and low-VOC finishes, appeal to environmentally conscious homeowners. LED task lighting integrated under upper cabinets or within glass-front displays enhances functionality and ambiance, marrying form with advanced technology.

Bath Cabinet Trends: Vanities with a Twist

Bathrooms are getting the custom treatment too. Floating vanities—hung off the floor—create a sense of spaciousness, perfect for smaller baths. Freestanding, sculptural vanities in natural wood or painted finishes offer furniture-like elegance, turning storage into statement pieces. Vertical storage towers beside sinks maximize space, while open shelving mixed with closed cabinets balances display and concealment.
