Our Beginning with Custom Woodwork
Tom Burkhart picked up his first power saw at age 9. What started as a hobby later became formal training at Penland School of Craft, then a one-man shop in the basement of a rented house. Over the next four decades, Tom transformed his passion into a thriving business that serves Louisville, KY and southern Indiana to this day.
When Tom retired in 2019, he sought new ownership that would continue moving Burkhart forward with equal dedication to craft, innovation, and customer service. Owners Nick Davis and Andrew Just have been at the helm ever since. They are proud to be the guardians of The Burkhart Company’s story, and are thrilled to aid in its growth for decades to come.
Tom originally opened up shop in the basement of a rented house and continued to expand his reach over his next three locations. The Burkhart Company has truly thrived over the years with the addition of more employees of varying backgrounds, all contributing to the success of the company. We are eager to continue our growth and expansion across the Louisville and Southern Indiana area for decades to come.

Shutters
Shutters are a great way to frame your home’s interior and add dimension to your space. Our custom shutters are made in-house from regional hardwoods–never shipped from overseas. Our team will craft shutters with wide movable louvers in whatever color you’d like.

A HISTORICAL BUILDING
Our Shelby Park facility was built in 1886 as a woolen mill. It housed various textile and clothing manufacturing operations until The Burkhart Company moved in in 2000. The 65,000 square foot building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980s, and we’ve retained many of its antique features through our updates to the space, including original hardwood floors throughout and natural light that will make you forget you’re in a woodshop. We’d love to show you around!
